The Community Energy Club, run by Cornwall’s independent energy experts Community Energy Plus, has experienced another successful year of growth in 2013. The achievements of the group were topped off by reaching a major landmark in November, with over 2 million litres of oil ordered for its members. This has resulted in an average saving of £62.38 per household, and a total saving of nearly £50,981.10 since the club started operating in November 2011.
Now with 2,214 subscribers, the Community Energy Club pools the oil requirements of its members in Cornwall and West Devon either once or twice a month depending on the season. Using this collaborative buying power, the club is able to negotiate with suppliers to secure a good price. “For people who find it difficult or time-consuming to shop around, The Community Energy Club is a convenient way to make sure the price they receive is competitive,” explained Nicola McCheyne, Project Delivery Team Manager, who oversees the club’s administration at Community Energy Plus.
“With the painful rises in energy prices this autumn, any money we can put back in the pockets of householders is really helpful,” added Nicola. Community Energy Plus is a charity and social enterprise committed to helping Cornwall meet its energy needs fairly and sustainably. “Around 50% of Cornwall is off the mains gas network and many people are reliant on expensive forms of heating,” explained Nicola. “We are working hard to alleviate the threat of fuel poverty in Cornwall through group-buying projects like the Community Energy Club, and other practical measures like our insulation initiatives.”
Signing up to the club is simple, and members receive updates on buying dates and prices via e-mail, Facebook and Twitter. For people who aren’t regular computer users, paper-packs are available through the post.
